\u201cWestern civilization is what gave the word every goddamn liberal precept to adore,\u201d Bill Maher thundered during his \u201cNew Rules\u201d editorial on Friday\u2019s Real Time<\/em>. He went on to list religious freedom and other benefits. <\/p>\n

So, Maher contended, citing a recent statement from President Joe Biden, \u201cThe world would be a better place if we had more Israels.\u201d People live better today because of Western ideals, not in spite of them, Maher contended, and that\u2019s why he\u2019s struggling with the anti-Israel backlash, particularly on college campuses. \u201cIt\u2019s like a volcano that blew,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t know where this comes from.\u201d <\/p>\n

That was the theme that also came through in the night\u2019s panel discussion, which featured Fareed Zakaria, host of CNN\u2019s Fareed Zakaria GPS<\/em> and columnist for the Washington Post<\/em>, and Ian Bremmer, president of Eurasia Group and GZERO Media. There was much handwringing and few solid answers on how things got to this point.<\/p>\n

Zakaria said he understood how traumatized Israel is as a country, and brought up that killing people in Gaza will breed more hatred. \u201cHow do you separate the bad guys from a million children?\u201d he asked. <\/p>\n

Bremmer said there was \u201cno strategic reason (Israel) needs to eliminate Hamas today.\u201d But he also said he understood the need for vengeance, comparing it to that of a father whose daughter was raped. <\/p>\n

Maher brought up inflammatory statements from Hamas that promised more attacks like Oct. 7 as the reason for Israel\u2019s huge counterpunches. \u201cThey\u2019re (Hamas) telling you we\u2019re going to do this again.\u201d <\/p>\n

Bremmer blamed social media for enflaming people. Maher agreed, and said venemous posters were akin to the people with Tiki Torches. He said the ease of smart phone posting makes peoplle \u201cshady, mean, passive aggressive. They want to think of themselves as social justice warriors.\u201d He added, \u201cImagine if they had to move to Gaza.\u201d <\/p>\n

Earlier in the program, Maher talked with <\/strong>Rep. Dean Phillips, <\/strong>a Democratic Congressman from Minnesota\u2019s 3rd district who recently announced his campaign to primary Biden for the 2024 presidential nomination.<\/p>\n

Maher again made his case that Biden is now \u201cRuth Bader Biden,\u201d and while the host claimed he\u2019s done a good job, like the late Supreme Court Justice, \u201che did not know when to quit.\u201d <\/p>\n

Phillips pointed out the polls that indicate a massive number of Democrats want someone else to run. <\/p>\n

The Congressman was loose on the show, and at one point whipped out some glasses to show that he looks like Maher. But he emphasized that colleagues are talking about Biden\u2019s decline and his insistence that he will run, a prospect that \u201cwill make 2016 look joyful,\u201d Phillips said, adding, \u201cI wish we had more competition, rather than a coronation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden is going to lose the election, Phillips said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to do something, and thank goodness we still live in a country where we can.\u201d <\/p>\n

Maher zinged the candidate as he receited a long list of races and ethnicities he wanted to embrace. Maher reminded him not to forget the gays and trans people.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are at risk if we keep fighting each other on any lines,\u201d Phillips shot back. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
